Good-bye Cheyenne

Last week Cheyenne had her last day in our classroom.
Her family is moving up north to start a new life in the country.
We will miss Cheyenne's enthusiasm. laughter, energy and smile.  She was a big character in our class and boy will it be quiet without her.
We wish her all the best at her new school and hope she will visit us again one day!

Oobleck

As part of our Mysteries and Clues unit we have been looking at mysteries in Science.

The first lesson we did looked at a mysterious substance called Oobleck.

Oobleck is a non-newtonian liquid.
Here is an explanation of what this means:

All fluids have a property known as viscosity that describes how the fluid flows – commonly thought of as how thick or thin a fluid is.
For instance, honey is much more viscous than water.

When a fluid’s viscosity is constant it is referred to as a Newtonian fluid. Oobleck is an example of a fluid whose viscosity is not constant, it changes depending on the stress or forces applied to it. If you poke it with your finger and apply a large force, it becomes very viscous and stays in place. If you gently pour it, applying little force, it will flow like water. It becomes more viscous when agitated or compressed

We had a lot of fun experimenting and making this crazy substance!!

Marae Trip

On Monday 12th May Rms 8 and 11 went together to the Edgewater Marae.

We have been learning about Maori protocol, and this was a great opportunity to try out our knowledge.

When we arrived we had to wait at the main gate to be called onto the Marae.  We had to wait because at this point we were strangers.

As we were called onto the Marae the singing helped to bridge the distance between  them and us.
The girls had to go first, followed by the boys.
But once we got into the Marae the boys had to sit at the front and the girls behind.

The ladies at the Marae gave us a gorgeous greeting.  Khusrav and Tristan used their knowledge to thank the people for having us.
Then we did a Hongi to help completely close the gap - we did this by sharing breath.

We then sealed the deal by having a small something to eat and drink.

Then it was on to the activities!

We did some artwork and then learned about the different parts of the Marae.  Both were very interesting.
We learnt the Marae is the body of the Ancestor.

Term 2!

Welcome back to Term 2!
We have lots of exciting things planned for this term, and we can't wait to get stuck into some fabulous learning.

We've had a few changes this term with a  new teacher coming into our class.
At the end of Term 1 we said good-bye to Mrs Cels who accepted a new teaching position on Waiheke Island.  We will miss her heaps, but know that it will be so much easier for her not having to catch the ferry everyday.
Mrs Harper is now teaching in Rm 11 on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday; and we still have Mrs Deutchman on Thursday and Friday.

We hope you check in each week to see what we are up to.  Please leave us a comment so we know that you care ;)

Here is picture of us in all our fabulousness....
